THE BRIEF28 SEPTEMBER 202608:49 BST
TODAY’S PATTERN

The cost of employing people is now destroying jobs, trade deals are being outbid in real time, and retail investors are being sold liquidity that does not exist.

We see the pattern, so you don’t get blindsided.

THE PATTERN

What repeats is trying to tell you something.

01

LAW OF THE TRAP

A decision that looks rational in one context becomes a locked door in another. The government needed revenue and raised employer NIC. Businesses needed margins and stopped hiring. Workers needed jobs that are no longer being posted. Each actor followed the logic of their position. The trap is that no single decision caused this. The mechanism did. What is being done to your head: headlines say unemployment is stable at 4.9%. What they do not say is that vacancies have been falling for two straight years and one million young people have quietly left the count.

02

LAW OF PROJECTION

People see what they expect to see and stop reading after the headline they wanted. The UK-India deal was announced as a historic win and the coverage stopped there. What continued moving in the background was the EU negotiating better terms with the same counterparty at the same moment. What is being done to your head: trade deal announcements are political events dressed as economic ones. The number that matters is not whether a deal exists. It is the size of the quota and the depth of the tariff cut relative to your nearest competitor. The UK government projected a win. The EU delivered a larger one to different beneficiaries.

03

LAW OF THE ADDICT

The product delivers enough return in good conditions to justify ignoring the structural risk. Retail investors piled into evergreen funds because they appeared to offer private equity returns with the convenience of a bank account. The high was real. The withdrawal terms were in the footnotes. What is being done to your head: the word democratisation is doing significant work here. When institutions say they are giving ordinary people access to returns previously reserved for the wealthy, the question to ask is what they are getting in return. The answer is a larger pool of capital to deploy, and a customer base less likely to understand gating risk until they experience it.
