The Jobs That Were Not Created Are The Story. Not The Ones That Were Lost.
The UK employer NIC hike was sold as a revenue measure. The September ONS data confirms it has been a jobs measure too. Over 100,000 payrolled positions gone in a year. Vacancies at their lowest since the pandemic. One million young people sitting outside the economy entirely.
THE STREETSLAW OF THE TRAP
WHAT'S HAPPENING
In April 2025, the government raised employer National Insurance from 13.8% to 15% and cut the earnings threshold at which it kicks in from £9,100 to £5,000 per year. The September 2026 ONS release shows the result: 101,000 fewer payrolled employees year-on-year. UK vacancies have fallen for eight consecutive quarters to 702,000, the lowest since February 2021. Youth NEET — young people not in education, employment or training — hit one million for the first time since 2013. The jobs were not taken. They were not posted.
YOUR WALLET
Know this: employer NIC is a tax paid by the business on top of your salary. An employee on the UK average wage of £36,000 now costs their employer £938 more per year in NIC alone. The secondary threshold drop from £9,100 to £5,000 means businesses start paying NIC on lower-paid workers sooner. For a part-time worker, a young worker, a first hire — the maths no longer clears. The job does not get offered. The vacancy does not appear. Youth unemployment is sitting at 14.1% and one in five young people not in full-time education is now economically inactive.
YOUR WILL
The Law of the Trap: a decision that looks rational in one context becomes a locked door in another. The government needed revenue and raised employer NIC. Businesses needed margins and stopped hiring. Workers needed jobs that are no longer being posted. Each actor followed the logic of their position. The trap is that no single decision caused this. The mechanism did. What is being done to your head: headlines say unemployment is stable at 4.9%. What they do not say is that vacancies have been falling for two straight years and one million young people have quietly left the count.
THE MOVE
The Sovereign One does not wait for the vacancy to appear. When the jobs market is contracting at the bottom, the skill or the asset becomes the leverage. The question worth sitting with: what can you produce or provide that bypasses the employer entirely? Sovereign Step 4, Build the Strategic Reserve. Margin is not idle resource. It is the quiet breathing room where genuine leverage lives.

The UK Signed Its Biggest Trade Deal Since Brexit. The EU Just Signed A Better One With The Same Country.
The UK-India trade deal came into force on 15 July 2026. The EU-India deal concluded in January and is now at the Council for signature in September 2026. The EU got a vehicle quota six times the size of the UK's. The celebration was premature.
THE JUNGLELAW OF PROJECTION
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement entered into force on 15 July 2026, described by government as the most significant post-Brexit trade deal. Then the EU-India deal, concluded in January 2026 after nearly two decades of negotiations, moved to formal Council signature in September 2026. The EU-India deal covers 96.6% of EU goods to India at reduced or zero tariff, saving European exporters approximately €4 billion a year in duties. The vehicle quota the EU secured — 250,000 cars annually into India at reduced tariff — is six times larger than the quota the UK negotiated. India did not get more generous. The UK got less.
YOUR WALLET
Know this: a tariff is an import tax. When India cuts tariffs on EU cars from 110% to 10% under a quota six times the size of the UK's quota, EU carmakers — BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen — gain a structural price advantage in India over UK exporters selling the same vehicles. UK Scotch whisky gets tariffs cut from 150% to 75%. EU wine and spirits get duties cut from 150% to 20-30%. UK-India bilateral trade is worth £48 billion annually. The EU-India deal covers a market of 2 billion people with €180 billion in annual trade already. The UK got in first. The EU got in bigger.
YOUR WILL
The Law of Projection: people see what they expect to see and stop reading after the headline they wanted. The UK-India deal was announced as a historic win and the coverage stopped there. What continued moving in the background was the EU negotiating better terms with the same counterparty at the same moment. What is being done to your head: trade deal announcements are political events dressed as economic ones. The number that matters is not whether a deal exists. It is the size of the quota and the depth of the tariff cut relative to your nearest competitor. The UK government projected a win. The EU delivered a larger one to different beneficiaries.
THE MOVE
The Sovereign One reads the annexes, not the press release. When a deal gets announced, the question is never whether it happened. It is who got the better version of it. The question worth sitting with: which UK export sectors are now competing against EU rivals with preferential Indian market access that the UK does not have? Sovereign Step 2, Sanction the Inputs. The quality of your judgment is determined entirely by what you refuse to let through the gate.

Wall Street Is Selling Ordinary People A Door They Cannot Exit When It Matters.
Evergreen private equity funds — marketed to retail investors as accessible alternatives to public stocks — hit a decade high in launches in 2025. In 2026, the gates started closing. Partners Group gated in June. Starwood suspended redemptions entirely in May. The SEC is still pushing harder access.
THE CASINOLAW OF THE ADDICT
WHAT'S HAPPENING
Evergreen funds are private equity or private credit vehicles packaged to look semi-liquid — meaning investors are told they can withdraw quarterly or monthly, unlike traditional private equity funds that lock money up for a decade. Evergreen fund launches hit 123 in 2025, a decade high. Assets in these vehicles topped $530 billion. In May 2026 Starwood's real estate evergreen fund suspended redemptions entirely. In June 2026 Partners Group — whose vehicle holds private equity buyout positions — triggered its quarterly redemption cap. The SEC, meanwhile, is actively advancing a 2026 agenda to push more retail investors into private markets. The product is being sold faster than the exits can be tested.
YOUR WALLET
Know this: when an evergreen fund gates, it means you requested your money back and the fund said no — or gave you a fraction. KKR's KREST gave investors just 56 cents on every dollar they tried to redeem in Q3 2024. Starwood's fund went from a 5% monthly redemption cap down to 0.33%, then to zero in May 2026. Partners Group's main vehicle holds $15.8 billion and is facing redemption requests estimated at 6% of net asset value against a 5% quarterly cap. In the US, the SEC has already removed criteria limiting many private investments to accredited investors — meaning virtually anyone can now buy into these structures through interval funds. The liquidity window is not a guarantee. It is a queue with a capacity limit.
YOUR WILL
The Law of the Addict: the product delivers enough return in good conditions to justify ignoring the structural risk. Retail investors piled into evergreen funds because they appeared to offer private equity returns with the convenience of a bank account. The high was real. The withdrawal terms were in the footnotes. What is being done to your head: the word democratisation is doing significant work here. When institutions say they are giving ordinary people access to returns previously reserved for the wealthy, the question to ask is what they are getting in return. The answer is a larger pool of capital to deploy, and a customer base less likely to understand gating risk until they experience it.
THE MOVE
The Sovereign One reads the redemption terms before the return projections. Semi-liquid is not liquid. A quarterly redemption window is not an exit. It is a permission to ask for one. The question worth sitting with: if you cannot exit an investment at the moment you most need to, what is the actual value of holding it? Sovereign Step 6, Internal Intelligence Agency. The most expensive deceptions are never the ones sold outside, but the ones rationalised within.
