TODAY’S PATTERN

Governments worldwide are paying more to service old debt than to build anything new, and ordinary people absorb that cost without being asked.

We see the pattern, so you don’t get blindsided.

THE PATTERN

What repeats is trying to tell you something.

01

LAW OF THE LANDLORD

The landlord always gets paid first. Before schools. Before hospitals. Before wages rise. Bondholders collect before citizens do, and the state has already agreed to those terms in writing. What this does to your head is make the debt feel abstract and distant. It is not. It is the ceiling on what your government can offer you. Every public service cut is downstream of this number. The question being suppressed is: who agreed to this arrangement, and who benefits from keeping it going.

02

LAW OF THE TRAP

The system extends credit on terms that look manageable at the point of entry and become extractive at the point of repayment. Cheap debt in a low-rate world was the door. Rate rises and refinancing at higher costs is the lock. The psychological effect on citizens of these countries is learned helplessness: austerity arrives, services vanish, and the explanation given is fiscal responsibility. The mechanism underneath is that the trap was set before the borrower understood the terms.

03

LAW OF ENTROPY

Complex systems degrade toward disorder unless energy is continuously applied to hold them together. The UK gilt market held its order for two decades because pension funds, regulated to buy long-dated bonds, absorbed the supply. Defined benefit pensions are dying. Quantitative tightening means the Bank of England is selling gilts back into the market, not buying them. Overseas investors now hold 33.4 percent of all gilts. The structure that kept borrowing cheap is unwinding. Most people do not notice until the cost shows up as a service cut.
