America Has $1.26 Trillion in Credit Card Debt. The Fed Just Made It More Expensive to Carry.

Ninety days past due on a credit card balance has gone from 7.6 percent of accounts in 2022 to 12.8 percent today. The hike did not create this fire. It just turned up the heat.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

The Federal Reserve raised rates to 3.75 to 4.00 percent on 17 September 2026, the first hike since July 2023. Americans are carrying $1.26 trillion in credit card debt, near a record, and average APRs already sit just below 21 percent. The hike does not create the debt. It compounds it. Every variable-rate card reprices within 60 days. The person already behind pays more. That is not a side effect. That is the mechanism.

YOUR WALLET

A consumer carrying the average Q2 2026 credit card balance of $6,610 at 22 percent APR sees minimum monthly payments rise by roughly $1.38 per month per quarter-point hike, according to TransUnion. Stacked hikes compound that. A 0.25-point move on a $40,000 home equity line adds around $8 per month. New car average loan rate is already 7 percent, average monthly payment $765. The second hike, projected to take the rate to 4.1 percent by December, is already priced into nothing your bank has told you.

YOUR WILL

Law of the Trap. The trap does not announce itself. It builds slowly: a credit card to cover rent, another for groceries, a car loan at 10.6 percent because the bus does not reach the job. Then the rate moves and every existing debt gets heavier overnight. The system is not punishing recklessness. It is charging a fee for surviving in it. Delinquencies at 12.8 percent tell you how many people are already inside. The hike tells you the door just got heavier.

THE MOVE

The Sovereign One does not wait for the second hike to act. Step 4 is Build the Strategic Reserve. That means cash in a high-yield account yielding 3.8 to 4.2 percent today, not a branch savings account at 0.4 percent, and any variable-rate debt treated as a live threat not a manageable line. Ask yourself: if rates hit 4.1 percent by December, which of your debts reprices and by how much? Price it now.

Canada Just Sent 30 Percent More of Its Exports to China. Washington Made It Do That.

In 2022, 83 percent of Canadians called the US a reliable partner. That number is now 35 percent. Trade data moves slower than opinion polls. For the first half of 2026, it caught up.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Canadian exports to China rose 30.1 percent in the first half of 2026, reaching C$21.74 billion, the highest first-half value since 1997. Energy products surged 81.8 percent year on year, with crude petroleum exports more than doubling to C$5.96 billion. This is not ideology. This is what happens when a country that trusted you for 75 years watches you impose 25 percent tariffs on its cars. Prime Minister Carney has set a target of doubling exports to non-US markets by 2035. The trajectory is already ahead of schedule.

YOUR WALLET

For UK and US households, this matters through oil and commodity pricing. Canada is redirecting crude through the Trans Mountain Pipeline at 97 percent capacity toward Asia, tightening supply available to North American refiners. The same copper and mineral flows now heading to China feed the components of every electric vehicle, every data centre, every battery pack priced in sterling and dollars. Commodity tightening from a diverted ally is an inflation input that no central bank dot plot has named yet.

YOUR WILL

Law of the Narcissist. The narcissist cannot conceive that their behaviour changes others. Washington treated Canada as captive and was surprised when Canada left the room. The same pattern is running across 36 surveyed countries: a median of 23 percent now express confidence in US global leadership. Allies do not announce their pivot. They reroute the pipeline, sign the working group, and let the export data speak. By the time the narcissist notices, the relationship has already restructured.

THE MOVE

The Sovereign One reads the Canadian pivot not as a political story but as a commodity and currency signal. Step 6 is Internal Intelligence Agency: track what your allies are doing before the headline runs. Canada routing crude to Asia means North American refined product gets tighter. Copper diverted from US supply chains means input costs rise for the manufacturers who stayed. The question worth sitting with: which of your assumptions about supply rely on an alliance that is visibly repricing?

03

Indonesia Is About to Hike Rates It Cannot Afford to Hike Because Washington Hiked First.

The Fed sets its rate for the United States. The rupiah absorbs it without a vote. That is how reserve currency privilege is extracted from the Global South every single cycle.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

The Federal Reserve hike pushed the dollar to a seven-week high. Indonesia's rupiah depreciated 0.34 percent to 17,735 per US dollar on 17 September. Bank Indonesia meets on 22 to 23 September and is widely expected to raise its benchmark rate from 5.75 to 6.00 percent to stem capital outflows. Indonesia already views China more favourably than the United States, with 69 percent positive on China versus a minority for the US. A country being forced to raise rates by a foreign central bank is not a partner. It is a subject.

YOUR WALLET

When Bank Indonesia raises its rate to contain dollar outflows, Indonesian borrowing costs rise for every business operating there: UK firms with Indonesian supply chains, commodity importers relying on Indonesian nickel and palm oil, any fund holding Indonesian government bonds. Indonesian inflation hit 3.19 percent in August, near the top of the central bank target band. The Fed median projection now shows core PCE at 3.4 percent by end 2026, leaving the door open for a further hike in Q4. Every additional 25 basis points in Washington costs Indonesia another policy response it has not budgeted.

YOUR WILL

Law of Entropy. Systems do not collapse in one move. They degrade incrementally. Each Fed hike extracts a little more stability from the countries least able to absorb it. Capital flows to the dollar because US yields rise. The rupiah falls. Bank Indonesia raises rates to defend the currency. Indonesian businesses borrow at higher costs. Exports get squeezed. The disorder compounds quietly. Nobody announces it. It appears in a currency line and a central bank meeting date. By the time it reaches a headline, the damage is already several quarters old.

THE MOVE

The Sovereign One understands that Fed hikes do not happen in isolation. Step 5 is The Day After Doctrine: model the second-order consequence before the market prices it. Indonesia forced to hike means nickel and palm oil supply chains face cost pressure. It means Indonesian bonds reprice. It means any position in emerging market assets needs a stress test for dollar strength at 4.1 percent federal funds rate by December. The question worth sitting with: are your assumptions about commodity input costs built on a rate environment that no longer exists?
