THE BRIEF13 OCTOBER 202607:52 BST
TODAY’S PATTERN

China borrowed to build, not to spend on wars, and the surplus is now everyone's problem.

We see the pattern, so you don’t get blindsided.

THE PATTERN

What repeats is trying to tell you something.

01

LAW OF THE LANDLORD

The person who controls the asset sets the terms for everyone else. China controls the factory. It controls the battery supply chain. It controls the price. When one party can sell below the cost of production and absorb the loss indefinitely, every other seller in that market is a tenant. European and British carmakers are paying rent on a market they thought they owned. Know this: when something feels impossibly cheap, someone else is carrying the cost. Find out who, and find out how long they can keep doing it.

02

LAW OF ENTROPY

Complex systems built on compounding debt degrade from the edges inward before the centre admits anything is wrong. The Chinese state spent two decades building infrastructure to generate growth, using land sales as collateral, borrowing against a property market that has since collapsed 17 percent in major cities. The collateral is worth less. The debt is the same. The swap programme renames the liability and resets the clock. Know this: when a government announces a debt cleanup, check whether the debt was cancelled or merely moved. These are not the same thing.

03

LAW OF THE TRAP

A market structured around unsustainable pricing conditions draws in buyers and developers who build long-term plans on a cost base that cannot last. Governments and businesses globally have approved solar projects modelled on module prices of 10 cents per watt. When consolidation hits and prices rise, those projects face a shortfall they did not budget for. The trap is not the cheap price. The trap is the dependency built on top of it. Know this: record-low prices in a market controlled by one nation's industrial policy are not a new normal. They are a condition with an expiry date.

Choose a headline.

  1. 01

They built the road and they built the rail

  2. 02

Now they're building whips and underselling the sale

  3. 03

£18k for a motor, whole market going pale

  4. 04

Frank ain't in the boardroom, Frank is setting bail

  5. 05

BYD on the forecourt, Vauxhall in the morgue

  6. 06

State debt running engines while the rest absorb

  7. 07

Dolphin in the showroom, European firms at war

  8. 08

You think it's cheap? Nah, someone paid before

  9. 09

Sovereign clocks the model, knows the price won't last

  10. 10

Built on borrowed billions, built to move too fast

Money Bible 101: the cheapest car in the room was already paid for by someone else.

  1. 01

Sixty-six trillion buried under concrete and rail

  2. 02

Renamed it a bond swap and hoped no one could tell

  3. 03

LGFV on the books like a ghost in the cell

  4. 04

Collateral was land and the land price fell

  5. 05

Frank moves the decimal, press release drops clean

  6. 06

Hidden debt official now, same debt different seam

  7. 07

Shadow loan at eight percent when the bank won't lend

  8. 08

Sovereign reads the footnote, clocks it front to end

  9. 09

Cleanup is a costume, the weight stays the same

  10. 10

They changed the name on the building, not the blame

Money Bible 101: a debt renamed is still a debt owed.

  1. 01

Built 1.8 terawatts, world needs half of that

  2. 02

Price hit ten cents a watt and it still never stacked

  3. 03

Jinko shipping panels while the balance sheet cracks

  4. 04

Sovereign locks the order in before the rebound tracks

  5. 05

VAT rebate gone, April hit the floor

  6. 06

Cheap era was a weapon, now they've closed the door

  7. 07

Developers built models on a price that couldn't hold

  8. 08

Trap was always in the number that they sold

  9. 09

Quick Silver clocked the margin, clocked the expiry date

  10. 10

Move on the cheap window, never move too late

Money Bible 101: the lowest price in history is still a price someone set.
