TODAY’S PATTERN

Three nations are quietly pricing the cost of leaving a union that is no longer carrying them.

We see the pattern, so you don’t get blindsided.

THE PATTERN

What repeats is trying to tell you something.

01

LAW OF THE TRAP

the system offers you something that looks like freedom and charges you for the attempt. Scotland is told it cannot afford independence, so it tries to build fiscal credibility by issuing bonds. But the bonds themselves trigger rating warnings that prove the unionist argument. The trap is elegant. Every move toward the exit makes the exit more expensive. An 18-year-old watching this needs to understand that the cost of leaving is being set by the people who benefit from you staying.

02

LAW OF THE LANDLORD

the person who controls access to the resource controls the person who needs it. Wales has been told for decades it cannot survive without the block grant. That framing keeps Wales compliant and Westminster comfortable. The new Plaid government is not disputing the numbers yet. It is writing a White Paper. That is how you begin to reframe who the landlord is. An 18-year-old in Cardiff needs to understand that the argument about affordability is also an argument about who gets to set the terms of affordability.

03

LAW OF THE NARCISSIST

the person at the centre of the arrangement refuses to acknowledge it has changed, because acknowledging it would require acknowledging they are no longer the most important actor in the room. Westminster created the Windsor Framework as a compromise. Northern Ireland turned it into a structural competitive advantage. The unionist argument that Northern Ireland's identity depends on remaining within the UK is now in direct tension with the economic argument that Northern Ireland's commercial value was created precisely by not being fully inside either bloc. An 18-year-old in Belfast needs to understand that their postcode just became the most valuable trade address in Europe.
