Education and recruitment systems may be adapting slower than employers and governments are reorganising around AI.

The Digital Education Council's AI in Higher Education Global Survey 2026 found 88 percent of students now use AI in their learning while only 29 percent believe their instructors are equipped to guide them on AI use. Students have made up their minds. Their universities have not. Fifty-seven percent say their assessments offer inadequate AI guidance. The institution collects the tuition. It is not delivering the map.

UK university tuition runs up to £9,535 per year. US fees average over $38,000 annually at private institutions. Students paying that rate to sit in rooms taught by faculty who are, by their own admission, behind the tool the student already uses daily. Twenty-two percent of students in the DEC survey said working without AI is now harder. Dependency is building on both sides. One side is getting paid to fall behind.

The DEC data shows 37 percent of students have serious doubts about whether their programme is relevant for AI and the future. They have named the trap. Most are still inside it. Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Barclays are cutting junior analyst hiring classes by as much as two-thirds, according to McKinsey QuantumBlack senior partner Debasish Patnaik. AI is absorbing the research, synthesis, and model-building work that defined entry-level finance. Goldman President John Waldron called bank operations a human assembly line ready for automation. Barclays has already used AI to summarise over 8 million customer calls. The restructuring is quiet. Attrition and class reduction, not headlines.

A UK finance graduate typically earns £30,000 to £45,000 in their first analyst role. A US Wall Street junior analyst earns $100,000 to $120,000 in year one. Both pathways are narrowing. Consulting firms including McKinsey, Bain, BCG, and Deloitte have trimmed junior headcount simultaneously. According to Forrester, consulting firms using AI report 40 percent productivity gains. That number directly translates to fewer seats for new graduates. The maths is not complicated.

The Law of the Landlord: those who own the infrastructure decide who gets access and on what terms. The banks built the prestige pipeline and now they are closing the gate. What makes this psychologically brutal is that young people followed every instruction. Good grades. Target university. Internship. Now the terms have changed after the investment was made. The sunk cost keeps graduates loyal to a door that is quietly closing. That is the landlord extracting rent on a building he is quietly demolishing.

Starting the 2025 to 2026 academic year, the UAE mandated artificial intelligence as a formal subject across all public schools from kindergarten through Grade 12, covering seven domains including data, algorithms, ethics, and real-world applications. One thousand specially trained teachers are delivering it. China mandated at least eight hours of AI instruction per year from first grade upward. The UK has no national AI curriculum mandate. The US has no federal equivalent. Stanford's 2026 AI Index confirmed only half of US middle and high schools have any AI policy at all.

A UK child in a state school today has no guaranteed AI literacy instruction. A UAE child the same age is receiving it as a core subject with a trained specialist teacher. That divergence compounds annually. The graduate entering the UK workforce in 2035 will compete directly in a global labour market against candidates for whom AI was a first language from age four. PwC 2025 data found a 56 percent wage premium for workers with AI skills in exposed occupations. The curriculum gap is already a wage gap. It just has not shown up on payslips yet.

The Law of Entropy: systems that are not actively maintained deteriorate. A child's AI literacy is no different. Western education systems are not actively failing, they are passively decaying against a moving benchmark. The psychological mechanism is false equivalence: because every UK child has a tablet and internet access, parents assume the skills gap is not real. Access to a tool is not literacy in it. An 18-year-old without structured AI education is not behind the UAE peer because of intelligence. They are behind because the state did not invest. That distinction matters.
