Your Boss Just Got a £937 Tax Bill Per Worker. Guess Who Pays For It.
The Autumn Budget raised employer National Insurance from 13.8% to 15% and cut the threshold at which it kicks in. That cost lands on your wages, your hours, or your job.

What's Happening
From April 2025, every UK employer pays National Insurance — a payroll tax — at 15% instead of 13.8%. The threshold at which it starts dropped from £9,100 to £5,000 per employee. That means bosses owe more tax on more of your wages. For a worker on average earnings of £36,000, the employer's annual bill rises by £937.80. In low-wage sectors like hospitality, retail, and care, the percentage hit is even larger. The Office for Budget Responsibility confirmed employers will pass this on.
Your Wallet
Know this — National Insurance (NI) is a tax employers pay on top of your salary. It's not deducted from your pay slip, but it shapes every decision your employer makes about hiring, pay rises, and hours. For an employee earning £20,000, the employer's NI bill rises 50% — from £1,504 to £2,250 a year. Hospitality, care, and retail carry the highest exposure. Two-thirds of British retailers have already said they'll raise prices in response.
Your Will
Law of the Trap: the system presents one door as the only exit. Labour said it wouldn't raise NI on workers. It raised it on employers instead. That framing held long enough to get the budget through. The OBR confirmed what anyone who runs payroll already knew — the cost doesn't sit with the employer. It moves. Into prices, into frozen wages, into fewer hours. The trap was always calling it something other than a worker tax.
The Move
The Sovereign One doesn't wait for the pay rise that isn't coming. Step 3: End Emotional Deficit Spending. The real cost of this budget lands in April 2025. That's the deadline. If your income depends entirely on one employer absorbing a £937-per-head tax increase without changing your terms, now is the time to price what you're actually worth elsewhere — before the market resets for you.
Eat or become food, Darling.
