SK Hynix and Samsung Sold Out Their Memory Before You Could Buy It
The three companies that make 95% of the world's DRAM have quietly redirected the majority of their production to AI data centres. Your laptop RAM, your phone storage, your next PC upgrade — all sitting at the back of a very long queue.

What's Happening
Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron — the three firms controlling over 95% of global DRAM production — have shifted 93% of their combined output toward high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, for AI accelerators. HBM is the specialist memory that sits inside Nvidia's chips powering data centres. Samsung and SK Hynix raised HBM3E contract prices 20% for 2026 and sold out their entire year's production under long-term agreements. Standard DDR5 prices — the RAM in your devices — surged more than 90% in Q1 2026 alone.
Your Wallet
A single HBM3E memory module sells for roughly $300. A comparable amount of standard DDR5 sells for $5 to $10. Three companies did the maths and pointed their factories at the $300 item. SK Hynix has already pre-sold most of its 2027 HBM output at prices above 2026 levels. Micron says HBM prices could double again in 2027. For UK and US consumers: laptops, phones, and PCs are getting more expensive. Memory represents 30 to 40% of an AI chip's manufacturing cost, so every AI product you buy carries this markup too.
Your Will
Law of the Narcissist: the system serves whoever the system finds most profitable. Hyperscalers — Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta — signed multi-billion-dollar memory contracts years ahead. They got the supply. You get what's left, at a higher price. Most consumers think a chip shortage means a factory blew up. This one means the factory is running perfectly. It's just running for someone else. Understanding that distinction changes how you feel about tech prices — it's not bad luck. It's prioritisation.
The Move
The Sovereign One doesn't get surprised by a price rise that's been visible in a quarterly earnings report for 18 months. Step 4 — Build the Strategic Reserve — means buying the hardware you actually need before the shortage hits your price bracket. If you're planning a PC build, a laptop upgrade, or any memory-heavy purchase, Q4 2026 is cheaper than Q2 2027 is going to be. The data is public. The timeline is published. Act before the price does.
Eat or become food, Darling.

02 Flipped the line to HBM — your DDR5 got sent
03 Hyperscalers locked the contracts, signed 'em early
04 Consumer's at the back of queue, looking poorly
05 Samsung don't need a press release to raise the rate
06 Shortage's by design — that's the margin, not fate
07 Money narrates cold: it's not broke, it's redirected
