America Has $1.26 Trillion in Credit Card Debt. The Fed Just Made It More Expensive to Carry.
Ninety days past due on a credit card balance has gone from 7.6 percent of accounts in 2022 to 12.8 percent today. The hike did not create this fire. It just turned up the heat.

What's Happening
The Federal Reserve raised rates to 3.75 to 4.00 percent on 17 September 2026, the first hike since July 2023. Americans are carrying $1.26 trillion in credit card debt, near a record, and average APRs already sit just below 21 percent. The hike does not create the debt. It compounds it. Every variable-rate card reprices within 60 days. The person already behind pays more. That is not a side effect. That is the mechanism.
Your Wallet
A consumer carrying the average Q2 2026 credit card balance of $6,610 at 22 percent APR sees minimum monthly payments rise by roughly $1.38 per month per quarter-point hike, according to TransUnion. Stacked hikes compound that. A 0.25-point move on a $40,000 home equity line adds around $8 per month. New car average loan rate is already 7 percent, average monthly payment $765. The second hike, projected to take the rate to 4.1 percent by December, is already priced into nothing your bank has told you.
Your Will
Law of the Trap. The trap does not announce itself. It builds slowly: a credit card to cover rent, another for groceries, a car loan at 10.6 percent because the bus does not reach the job. Then the rate moves and every existing debt gets heavier overnight. The system is not punishing recklessness. It is charging a fee for surviving in it. Delinquencies at 12.8 percent tell you how many people are already inside. The hike tells you the door just got heavier.
The Move
The Sovereign One does not wait for the second hike to act. Step 4 is Build the Strategic Reserve. That means cash in a high-yield account yielding 3.8 to 4.2 percent today, not a branch savings account at 0.4 percent, and any variable-rate debt treated as a live threat not a manageable line. Ask yourself: if rates hit 4.1 percent by December, which of your debts reprices and by how much? Price it now.
Eat or become food, Darling.
