NEC Neoface Is Now on Metropolitan Police Officers' Phones. 80,000 Protesters Were Scanned in One Afternoon.
The technology moved from vans to lampposts to protest grounds to handheld devices. Parliament still has not voted on any of it.

What's Happening
On 16 May 2026, the Metropolitan Police deployed live facial recognition at a protest for the first time, scanning approximately 80,000 people across two demonstrations in Camden. The Met is now piloting NEC Neoface software on handheld devices carried by 100 officers, matching faces during individual police stops. Static cameras were bolted to lampposts in Croydon from October 2025 to March 2026, scanning 470,000 faces. A new National Centre for AI in Policing with £115 million in government funding is being established. No primary legislation governs any of it.
Your Wallet
Croydon's six-month pilot scanned 470,000 faces to produce 173 arrests — one arrest per 2,717 scans. London-wide in 2024, 2 million faces were scanned and 804 arrests resulted. The Home Office is now consulting on a legal framework, but expansion is proceeding without waiting for one. The EU AI Act bars this technology except in narrow terrorism cases. The UK has no equivalent restriction in force. The system is expanding at the speed of deployment, not legislation.
Your Will
The Law of Entropy: systems of control, once initiated, do not contract. They degrade into their most expansive possible form. Each deployment was framed as a pilot. Each pilot was framed as temporary. The technology moved from vans to infrastructure to handheld devices to protests. The public absorbed each step as isolated. The pattern is not a series of decisions. It is one continuous motion. Surveillance always presents its most reasonable face at the door. By the time the face changes, the infrastructure is permanent.
The Move
The Sovereign One notes that the cost of attending a protest has changed. It now includes having your biometric identity logged by the state, regardless of innocence. Step 2, Sanction the Inputs. Information about your movements, associations, and political attendance is now being collected whether or not you consent. Know what the system holds. Build no digital footprint you are not prepared to defend.
Eat or become food, Darling.
