Electricity networks are becoming the binding constraint connecting household bills, industrial policy and AI expansion.

Germany already generates over 60 percent of its electricity from renewables. But the grid cannot move that power from where it is made to where it is needed. In 2025, grid congestion management cost German consumers 3.07 billion euros. Every year, billions are paid in compensation to renewable generators who were forced to switch off because the wires were full. The renewable transition is real. The infrastructure to complete it is not.

The average German household paid 39.6 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity in 2025, well above the 32.8 cents paid in 2021, and among the fifth-highest household power prices in the world. Approximately 3.5 percent of all renewable electricity generated could not reach end consumers due to grid bottlenecks. Germans are paying to build clean energy, paying again when that energy is wasted, and paying a third time on their monthly bill.

The Law of the Trap: the system presents two options, both of which cost you money. Pay for the grid upgrade or pay the congestion bill. Heads they win, tails you lose. German households are told they are financing a green future while simultaneously absorbing the cost of a grid that was never redesigned to carry it. The frustration is real. The trap is structural. Your anger is the intended output.

China added 429 gigawatts of net new power capacity to its grid in 2024 alone, equivalent to adding Germany's entire installed grid every single year. It invested 84.7 billion dollars in grid transmission expansion in that same year. Meanwhile, in Europe, over 500 gigawatts of wind projects sit in grid connection queues and permitting for cross-border grid projects takes an average of 5.6 years. China's renewable utilisation rate stays above 95 percent. The West is building the turbines and losing the race at the wire.

In the US, connecting a new data centre to the power grid can take 4 to 10 years, while AI data centres are typically built in two to three. At least 36 data centre projects were blocked or stalled in the US between May 2024 and June 2025. China's cost of utility-scale solar reached as low as 27 dollars per megawatt hour in 2025. The US equivalent exceeds that figure significantly. Every year of permitting delay is a year China's AI infrastructure scales cheaper, faster, and larger.

The Law of the Narcissist: the West believes its own story about leading the AI race because it counts the chips and the dollars. It does not count the megawatts. China understands that the competition was always about energy infrastructure, not compute alone. Western governments and corporations are optimising for press releases while China optimises for grid capacity. By the time the permits are approved, the advantage will be structural, not catchable.

Google's parent company Alphabet acquired clean energy developer Intersect Power for 4.75 billion dollars, giving it in-house capability to build renewable generation in lockstep with data centre demand. Microsoft has signed a 10.5 gigawatt renewable deal with Brookfield Asset Management, a 16 billion dollar nuclear deal with Constellation Energy for Three Mile Island, and a 20-year gas agreement with Chevron. Analysts now estimate a 150 billion dollar private grid is being constructed by data centre operators outside traditional utility timelines entirely.

In 2026 alone, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet are projected by Morgan Stanley to spend 630 billion dollars on data centres and AI-related investment. Data centre electricity demand surged 17 percent in 2025, and AI-focused data centres grew even faster. Electricity consumption from data centres is set to double to approximately 945 terawatt hours by 2030. The five largest tech companies deployed over 400 billion dollars in capital expenditure in 2025, with a further 75 percent increase projected for 2026. The private grid is not a metaphor. It is already under construction.

The Law of the Landlord: those who own the infrastructure collect rent from everyone who needs it. Google does not want to buy electricity anymore. It wants to own the source. When hyperscalers vertically integrate the power supply, they exit the public grid market and lock in cost advantages unavailable to smaller competitors, governments, or households. The public grid becomes the grid of last resort, for everyone who could not afford to buy their way out. That cost lands on your bill.
