TODAY’S PATTERN

Market sell-offs can reflect disappointed expectations and leverage rather than deterioration in the underlying businesses.

We see the pattern, so you don’t get blindsided.

THE PATTERN

What repeats is trying to tell you something.

01

LAW OF THE ADDICT

The market spent 18 months rewarding every capex increase as proof of AI demand. Now the same number triggers a sell-off. Nothing in the fundamentals changed between those two reactions. What changed was the high. Investors are now in withdrawal from a narrative that said spending equals winning. The moment that story stalled, the craving turned to fear. An 18-year-old needs to understand this: the asset did not change. The feeling people needed from it changed.

02

LAW OF PANIC

A 557 percent profit increase caused a market crash. That is the Law of Panic operating at industrial scale. The expectation was not anchored to the profit. It was anchored to an ever-larger future profit that had to keep arriving on schedule. When SK Hynix's numbers came in at merely extraordinary rather than cosmically extraordinary, the gap between reality and priced-in fantasy became visible for one session. That gap is called the correction. The fear is not what happened. The fear is what was assumed that did not happen.

03

LAW OF THE TRAP

The trap is not the debt. The trap is that the debt made the gains look earned. Margin debt up 54 percent while the S&P 500 rose 22 percent over the same period. The excess was leverage, not performance. An 18-year-old needs to understand this: if a stock went up 30 percent but half of that was borrowed money chasing it, then 30 percent is not the real number. The real number is what remains when the borrowing stops. The trap is that you cannot see inside someone else's margin account. You only see the price.
